  1. This is the basic directory structure used with AmigaNOS. Files marked with an asterisk did NOT come with either AmigaNOS
  2. package, and many other files were added by me later on (eg; TCPIP:Public....).
  3.  
  4. Both AmigaNOS versions instruct you to have a structure of AmigaNOS:TCPIP and AmigaNOS:SLIP. I found that the SLIP directory
  5. was nothing but a duplicate of the TCPIP directory, so removed it. I added a SLIP SUBdirectory when I got Graham's Gopher
  6. client, because IT required a SLIP subdirectory.
  7.  
  8. While I have used BM for electronic mail for a couple of years, I HIGHLY recommend using AmigaELM instead. If you can't get
  9. a statically assigned IP address, then you should try to obtain a POP2 account somewhere so you can send and receive elec-
  10. tronic mail. A static IP address would allow you to have your OWN, DEDICATED IP address and hostname, and then you would be
  11. able to receive mail DIRECTLY at your PC.
  12.  
  13. AmigaNOS will open TWO windows: command session and raw/trace output. You will need to adjust the startup window parameters
  14. to fit your Workbench (I use a super hi-res, interlaced screen with maximum overscan).
  15.  
  16. After the file structure tree that follows, I will include the basic AmigaDOS scripts and environment variables that I use
  17. to start up AmigaNOS.
  18.  
  19. Note that Graham's version uses ARUN which won't work with AmigaDOS V2.x while John's version uses RUN, for help, and works
  20. just fine with AmigaDOS V2.x. John has also fixed the LIST command error that occurs with Graham's version under AmigaDOS
  21. V2.x. Also note that Graham's Gopher program does not do a clean job of returning all memory used, and Gopher in general,
  22. can eat up a LOT of memory since almost EVERYthing that you request is "cached" in the T: directory.

  405. I have/use FIVE different set ups, hence the five different "flavors". The sample NOS-dial dialing
  406. file above can be used to automatically dial a SLIP/PPP "front end" and make the connection. NOTE,
  407. however, that if the "front end" process changes from time to time, or requires autobaud detect
  408. characters, that this process will have to be replaced with a manual dial via a terminal program,
  409. with a modified modem init string which tells it to NOT drop carrier when it sees DTR drop.

  411. If your dial-up "front end" is simple and straight forward, then you can use the NOS-dial file.
  412. You may need to add extra "send" and "wait" commands (CASE SENSITIVE BOTH for the command AND the
  413. literal string after it) to satisfy the "front-end" (eg; userid and/or password prompt).

  415. I use an "amiganos" environment variable to keep from accidently re-invoking AmigaNOS after it
  416. has alREADY been started. If you don't protect yourself and attempt to execute AmigaNOS while it
  417. is already running, it will crash (or lock up your machine - I don't remember which).

  419. I add then remove the AmigaNOS:C subdirectory simply because I don't want it in the command search
  420. order when I am NOT using AmigaNOS.

  422. With this basic set up, I enter "TCP <flavor>" to start up AmigaNOS in any CLI/Shell window. Users
  423. with AmigaDOS V1.x will have to make adjustments for the environment variables used.

  425. I set the "Amiganos" environment variable to "down" in my User-Startup script. If the dialing
  426. sequence fails or times out, AmigaNOS will quit and close the Command Session window, but you will
  427. have to manually reset the "amiganos" environment variable, AND close the AmigaNOS raw trace
  428. console.
